Wild Boar Growing Facilities

In order to raise Eurasian boars in the healthiest, most cost effective manner, Two Rivers Outdoor Club, Inc. has borrowed some of the techniques used in modern day swine production operations.  This technique is called Multi Site Swine Operation (MSSO).  While there are many different ways to implement this type of operation, most incorporate the physical separation of the breeding and farrowing operations from the growing operations.  It is a simple fact that when animals are kept in close proximity there is a greater the chance for disease outbreak and swift propagation.  In order to protect the animals, especially the select group of breeding animals, the swine in our operation are broken into three physically separate groups.

Group I:  Breeding, Gestation, and Farrowing Area - Group I is a very select herd of breeding Eurasian wild boars.  This is the most pampered and protected group of pure bred Eurasian swine.  All of the animals have access to dry shelter, clean water, and a high protein food supply.  The swine are identified by both ear tags as well as tattoos.  These animals are given the best of care since all other groups can be regenerated from these animals if the need arises.

Group II:  Nursery Area -  Group II is comprised of two to six month old Eurasian boar piglets physically separated from the breeding animals.  Once piglets are separated from the breeding herd, they are vaccinated, wormed, tattooed, and placed on a proprietary, staged feeding program.  Unwanted animals are culled from the group and either sold or slaughtered.  All young boars that are to be turned into barrows (castrated boars) undergo the procedure before leaving this area.

Group III:  Growing and Finishing Area - Group III is the final group and consist of all of the Eurasian barrows and gilts that made it through the culling process of Group II.  At four to six months of age the animals are transferred from the Group II area to the Group III area.  Animals will stay in Group III for approximately one to two years depending on the weight class of the intended customer.  The group has very little human contact and are free to roam throughout a large fenced area essentially undisturbed.  The animals are trapped a few times per year for health inspections and then released.
